When is it time to talk to someone?

All children have hard days. It may be worth talking to a psychologist when a change in mood or behaviour:

1has lasted more than a few weeks
2is getting in the way of school, friendships, sleep or family life
3is worrying you, even if you can't say exactly why

If your child talks about hurting themselves, or you're worried about their safety right now, don't wait: see our Urgent help page, or call 112 or Tele-MANAS 14416.

How we involve you

  1. 1You meet the psychologist first and share your worries without your child listening.
  2. 2Your child has their own time, so they can trust their psychologist.
  3. 3You get regular updates and practical things to try at home.
  4. 4Nothing happens without your consent as parent or guardian.

How to talk to your child about counselling

Keep it simple and honest.

With younger children, you could say“We're going to talk to someone whose job is to help kids with big feelings. It's not because you're in trouble.”
With teenagers

Give them a say

Let them choose when and how, and let them try one session before deciding.
